Andrew McCombe here, from Outlier TV, where we celebrate difference to make a difference. As we share inspiring stories of ordinary people, doing extraordinary things with their businesses and all their lives. And today’s out of the comfort zone interview. I’m with Gary Bencheghib. He’s the founder of “Make a change, World.”
I’m going to put him out of his comfort zone so you can get to know him a little better before our full Outlier episode is released in the next few days. Are you ready? Well, let’s go and meet Gary. Gary, welcome to Outlier. Mate, we’re going to put you out of your comfort zone for the viewers’ sake. It helps them get to know you a little better before your full Outlier episode’s released in the next few days.
Are you keen? (Sounds good, man.) Okay. So what we’re going to do, I’m going to ask you some rapid-fire questions. You’re going to answer the first thing that comes to mind and hopefully will put you out of your comfort zone. (Ask them, ask them.) Okay. So do you prefer to be an environmental activist, a filmmaker, or founder of “Make a change, World?”
Gary Bencheghib:
I think definitely environmental activists, like that inner calling that nature gave me. (Yeah, that’s the compulsion.) Yeah.
Andrew McCombe:
What’s your definition of being an environmental activist?
Gary Bencheghib:
I think environmental activist’s anybody that is protecting in a dedicated, as their number one focus to make sure that we sustain on this planet.
Andrew McCombe:
And so tell me about this “Make a change, world.”
Gary Bencheghib:
It is a media outlet, promoting sustainability news around the world, but also most recently, but really focusing towards protecting our rivers around the world.
Andrew McCombe:
Fantastic course. Describe the color green to someone who is blind.
Gary Bencheghib:
Well, that’s a tough one. I think if you think about grass. (That’s a tricky one, isn’t it? well, how would a blind person depict green, do you think?) My color is blue, like the ocean. (Oh, you like blue. Okay. Tell us about blue then.) Um, the way that water taste, the sky, the ocean. We’re a planet blue, literally, we’re the only planet in the entire galaxy that has this very one little resource called water. And so blue is all about making sure that we sustain as a planet.
Andrew McCombe:
Fantastic mate. Do you believe in global warming?
Gary Bencheghib::
I would see climate change as a more general term. we don’t really know what’s happening with warming. In the seventies, there was the big global dimming movement. Climate change is definitely happening, temperatures are rising, our oceans are rising.
Andrew McCombe:
And what do you say to people who may be skeptical or don’t believe in climate change?
Gary Bencheghib:
Come to the Citarum with me, and I’ll show you when it’s all done. (So what is the Citarum?) Citarum is the most polluted river. Come to the most polluted river with me and I’ll show you what it’s all about.
Andrew McCombe:
Pretty obvious. So how would you solve Earth’s problems if you were from Mars?
Gary Bencheghib:
Being a big plastic activist, I’m living on Mars. I don’t use plastics, Earth – everybody’s using plastics.
Andrew McCombe:
So how are they going to stop?
Gary Bencheghib:
Yeah, I mean maybe in a perfect world. (Just stop, turn them off.) But, that’s not the way life works.
Andrew McCombe:
I guess you have to watch the interview to work out the main solution. (Yeah, exactly.) Okay. So what’s your biggest inspiration or who?
Gary Bencheghib:
I was just at the world economic forum, you know, with one of my all times stars, Mike Horn, who just finished his expedition. He’s one of the biggest adventurers and explorers in the world. And some of the work he’s done is just off the hook. (And just raising awareness of the environment, is he?) recently, but more the physical fleets that he’s done, he’s done a solo expedition of the equator, fully human-powered. He really shows that, you know, human capabilities are way more than what we think, and it’s all in our minds.
Andrew McCombe:
Absolutely! What makes you happy?
Gary Bencheghib:
Cleaning polluted beaches.
Andrew McCombe:
What makes you sad?
Gary Bencheghib:
Seeing polluted beaches.
Andrew McCombe:
Very good answer. If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?
Gary Bencheghib:
I want to have an army of cleaners.
Andrew McCombe:
Fantastic. How would you like to be remembered?
Gary Bencheghib:
Cleaning rivers. (Making a difference, making a change to the world?) Yeah, yeah. Sure.
Andrew McCombe:
Okay. So why should the viewers watch your Outlier episode in the next few days, what are they going to learn?
Gary Bencheghib:
You’re going to learn all about making this planet better, cleaning rivers. It’s our big plastic pollution problem that is happening all around the world. And more so about what you can do as well. To become an activist or environmental activist.
