Andrew McCombe:

Hey guys, Andrew McCombe here, from Outlier TV, where we celebrate differences to make a difference. As we share inspiring stories of ordinary people, doing extraordinary things with their businesses and all their lives today, I’m lucky enough to be speaking to Joe Donne. He’s the co-founder of “Big Blue Fiji.” And he’s going to be my guest on this week’s Outlier TV episode being released in the next few days. Okay. Let’s go and meet Joe.

Okay, Joe, it’s customary on Outlier that we put you out of your comfort zone with a quick, rapid-fire, 10 questions, and three minutes to help the viewers get to know you a little better before they’ watch your major Outlier TV interview in the next few days. Are you keen? (Joe: I’m a little bit scared, but sure.)

So here’s how it’s going to work. I’m going to fire 10 questions at you and hopefully three minutes or less. And you’re going to tell the viewers the first thing that comes to mind. (Sounds good.) Are you ready to go? Okay.

So what’s an Englishman doing teaching scuba diving in Fiji. (Have you ever been to England?)

Joe Donne:

It’s a little bit chilly in England. Escaping English winter.

Andrew McCombe:

Very good. How many times have you been sunburned?

Joe Donne:

About 10,000 times, I guess. And including right now.

Andrew McCombe:

Vonu or Fiji Bitter?

Joe Donne:

Fiji. All the way. (Why?) A friend of mine used to own Vonu and he didn’t use to drink it. So if he doesn’t drink it, I’m not drinking it.

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. Would you rather be eaten by a shark or stung by a stingray?

Joe Donne:

Stung by a stingray. (Why?) Because, man, I’m not getting eaten by a shark.

Andrew McCombe:

If England played against Fiji in the Sevens, who will win and why?

Joe Donne:

Oh, I’m going to get beaten to death. Fiji would probably beat England. It’s a tough call, but Fiji would probably beat England.

Andrew McCombe:

Favorite sport?

Joe Donne:

Probably rugby. Yeah. Love rugby, love watching union. Awesome. (You play golf.) Yep. I love playing golf down around the courses here. Beautiful day out. I mean, I’m not very good, but I love it. Yeah, couple of cold beers and cruising around the course with a couple of mates. It’s always good fun.

Andrew McCombe:

Favorite course.

Joe Donne:

My favorite course. It’s really tough, but the Natadola golf course is awesome. Spectacular views. Unbelievable. But you gotta take a bag of 50 golf balls to get through the course.

Andrew McCombe:

Joe, have you become happier since you’ve been in Fiji?

Joe Donne:

Yeah, for sure. I mean, it’s dubbed the happiest country in the world for the last God knows how long. So I mean, if you’re not happy in Fiji, you’re not happy in any way.

Andrew McCombe:

Is there such thing as a whinging pom?

Joe Donne:

Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Just not in Fiji. Now you put us in. If you lived in England, you’d see why we whinge.

Andrew McCombe:

Favorite dive spot.

Joe Donne:

Favorite dive spot – Taveuni, the rainbow reef, the great white wall. One of the top 10 dive sites of the world. Unbelievable.

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. What’s the craziest bet you’ve ever made?

Joe Donne:

I’ve done lots of bets for lots of different sums of money, but I lost about 2000 bucks on the flip of a coin last weekend, at the local pub. After a few beers.

Andrew McCombe:

Have you ever used Viagra? (Nope, don’t need it. But there was a bit of a story there before that question?

So tell us about your affinity with Yellowfin tuna?

Joe Donne:

Oh, that was a good day. Yeah. I think you’ve been told about that day. I was feeling a little bit rough in the morning. After a few beers in the evening, fished all the way back to the mainland, came across a school of Yellowfin tuna. They were all around about 50 to 70 kilos, and we caught 10 or 12 of them that afternoon.

But I think I threw up on every single fish that came over the side. (So you couldn’t sell them after?) Oh, well, we might’ve sold a couple, but yeah, they were still good after they were washed out.

Andrew McCombe:

Have you ever fallen off a roof?

Joe Donne:

No, never fallen off a roof in my life. (Are you sure?) Maybe I’ve fallen off a roof. When I was living at Manta Ray Island, I made a jump onto a roof while it was raining one night. again, after a couple of beers, this seems like a bit of a trend, and the guys that just fitted the roof, must’ve screwed one of the light fixings with a live wire and got electrocuted and thrown off the roof.

(Did you hurt yourself?) A little bit. Yeah. Cut all my feet, pretty much bit the end of my tongue off when the shock went through me.

Andrew McCombe:

So I hear your favorite animal is an owl, and why?

Joe Donne:

Yeah, the owl. We used to just have an owl in the tree outside of the dive shop to warn off predatory birds.

Andrew McCombe:

What sort of birds? (Just predatory birds.) Okay. So would you rather be bitten by a catfish or a dogfish?

Joe Donne:

I would rather be bitten by a catfish cause that noodling stuff you see on TV is actually quite interesting. I’d like to give it a go. (That noodling stuff?) It’s where you go down into the Southern States and stick your hand into a hole underneath a rock and a catfish bites, and you pull him out.

Andrew McCombe:

Interesting. Okay. So if you could choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Joe Donne:

Now, I like The Verve, Bitter Sweet Symphony; I love that tune. (Is that reflective of your life?) I can’t really remember the lyrics right now, but I just like the beat, and it’s a great tune. Yeah. Good old English tune. (Well, Joe, looking forward to your Outlier TV interview in the next few days.)

Andrew McCombe:

Well there it is, guys. We’ve now learned a little bit more about Joe Donne.
