Andrew McCombe:

It’s Andrew McCombe here, from Outlier TV, where we celebrate difference to make a difference. As we share inspiring stories of ordinary people, doing extraordinary things with their businesses and all their lives today, I’m going to be speaking with Jackie Norman and Gareth Scurr from “My Van, My Castle”, and the revered “Riches have Wheels” Facebook page. They’ll be my guests on this week’s Outlier TV episode, being released in the next few days. Okay. Let’s go and meet them.

Okay. Jackie, Gareth, it’s customary on Outlier that we have an out of the comfort zone question session that helps the viewers get to know you guys a little better, but before we start Gareth, I want you to look down the barrel of that camera and say, “hi, my name’s Gareth. This is Jackie. And welcome to Outlier!” In Welsh, please. I cannot do that guys.

Gareth Scurr:

Oh no, I can’t do. I can’t remember.

Jackie Norman:

Ask to go to the toilet please, because you remember that from school.

Andrew McCombe:

Ok guys. So here’s how it’s going to work. 10 questions, three minutes. The first thing that comes to mind, you’re going to answer it. Okay. Here we go. You’re a new addition to the crayon box. Gareth. What color would you be? And why?

Gareth Scurr:

Blue. Just like it.

Jackie Norman:

Oh, purple. Cause it’s Royal. It’s Regal. It’s deep.

Andrew McCombe:

Jackie, the funniest thing that’s happened to you lately?

Jackie Norman:

Oh, my little thing has happened to me lately.

What’s happened? (Gareth: Concussion.) I gave myself a concussion. It wasn’t funny, but yeah. I reached under a desktop to plug in my phone charger and hit my head on the edge of the desk. And then when I came up, I did it again. So I did it twice for good measure.

Andrew McCombe:

Very good. I’m sure you’ve whacked your head on the van a few times too.

Jackie Norman:

Somebody has yeah. Frequently.

Andrew McCombe:

Jackie, how lucky are you, and why?

Jackie Norman:

I am extremely lucky. You know, we stayed at this campground last night. Taylor’s Mistake and it really brought home to me. You know, why we live the way we do it just reaffirms everything that we stand for, that we live for. I feel extremely lucky because I feel like I’m in control of my life. I’m in control of my decisions. I’m in control of where I go. What I see. I mean, those basics are already fantastic enough anyway, but everything else extra that comes to me is just, there are so many opportunities every day. So many amazing people.

Andrew McCombe:

Fantastic. Gareth, sum up your life in a song title, please.

Gareth Scurr:

Beautiful day. Everything’s beautiful. We live this amazing life. We get to go see new things almost every day. (Andrew: That’s a long song title.) Or just “beautiful day” from probably YouTube.

Andrew McCombe:

One part of New Zealand you haven’t visited yet that you’d like to, what would it be?

Jackie Norman:

I have not visited Gibson. And I really want to do though. Water slide. There’s this huge rock slide. I’d be keen to do that. We haven’t done The East Coast yet. Yeah. We need to do that.

Andrew McCombe:

Gareth, if your story was turned into a movie who would play your character other than Chris Hemsworth because you’re a tall look alike.

Gareth Scurr:

Jason Mamoa. He’s got the hair. He just needs to die it.

Andrew McCombe:

A very good. And how would you solve Earth’s problems if you were from Mars?

Gareth Scurr:

Blow the bloody place up.

Jackie Norman:

Yeah. I’d put all the horrible people on an island, Iid put Donald Trump on an Island, for a start, and that Boris Johnson. I’m really bad. I don’t keep up with news. I live positively. I don’t like to read about bad stuff, but reading from what everybody else, I’d put those two on an Island.

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. What do you think of garden gnomes? Other than looking like one?

Gareth Scurr:

I think they’re quite alright.

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. Jackie, if you could have your favorite pseudonym in all the world, what would it be?

Jackie Norman:

Oh, my goodness. Favorite pseudonym?!

Andrew McCombe:

For those viewers, a pseudonym is a fake name for writers who don’t want to be named by their own name.

Jackie Norman:

I would be Alexander Supertramp because I don’t know if you’ve seen it. I like it. In olden days when women couldn’t write under their own names, and they had to adopt a male name as a pseudonym. And the first movie Gareth and I watched together was “Into the wild” about this chap that goes to find himself. But he died in the end, in the magic bus. So it was a bit sad, but that was the name he used when he went out into the wild to find himself as Alexander Supertramp.

Andrew McCombe:

Gareth, the definition of being rich and/or wealthy. What does it mean to you?

Gareth Scurr:

Being happy? Yeah. You don’t need money to be happy. And yet being wealthy is having the wealth and abundance of joy to me.

Andrew McCombe:

So what’s your spirit animal?

Jackie Norman:

I’d say a dolphin. Cause they’re happy and free.

Andrew McCombe:

What do you do in your spare time? You’ve got a lot of it.

Gareth Scurr:

Look after her.

I just relax. Just travel. And cooking.

Jackie Norman:

Yeah. I love cooking. Puts his Cuban music on.

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. If you lost all your money tomorrow, what would you do the next day to make money?

Jackie Norman:

I haven’t got it anyway. If I lost money tomorrow, what would I do in the next day? I’d get busking. I’d sing.

Andrew McCombe:

Guys. (Jackie: They might pay me to shut up.) Do you have the car sticker – “If it’s a rockin’, don’t come in knocking.” And if not, why not?

Jackie Norman:

Yeah. Yeah. We know what it means.

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. Are you good at accents?

Jackie Norman:

Yeah. Our very first date. That’s how I knew he was the one because we had a shared love of Little Britain.

Gareth Scurr:

That’s what I think goes, Gollum.

Andrew McCombe:

So if fear was a person, what would you say to them?

Jackie Norman:

Bugger off.

Andrew McCombe:

Nothing more needed. If I told you 10 years ago, you’d be living in a van. What would you have said?

Gareth Scurr:

Bugger off!

Jackie Norman:

Yeah. I would have just laughed flat out. No way. No way. Who does it?

Andrew McCombe:

Yeah. Gareth. If one in three people are ugly, and Jackie and I are good looking. What does that make you?

Gareth Scurr:

Fuck ugly!

Andrew McCombe:

Okay. Jackie, what would you like to be remembered for?

Jackie Norman:

Inspiring people. We get that a lot. You know, people always write to us and say, you’ve inspired us. You’ve inspired me to do this. You’ve inspired me to want more, to seek more. And probably inspiring or just to be more inspired, to be more positive. You know, that’s what we’re all about. I think.

Andrew McCombe:

Well, there it is guys. We’ve now learned a bit more about Jackie Norman and Gareth Scurr, before our full Outlier TV episode is released.
